New version of “You’ve Got Time” from Orange Is the New Black is out now!

    July 25
New version of “You’ve Got Time” from Orange Is the New Black is out now!

A few months before the Broadway shows I was approached to do a special version of “You’ve Got Time” for the season finale of Orange Is The New Black. Initially they had mentioned an orchestra which sounded interesting. When I spoke with Jenji Kohan, my friend and the creator of the show, she said “maybe sparse is better than huge,” and I started imagining a smaller, more intimate version.

I asked Jack to help produce it. We sat at our home studio, and using the cello as a pulse, decided to remove the drums completely. We showed our idea to Rob Moose- the violinist and arranger of yMusic. (He and I met through Ben Folds when Ben connected us for the Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra project last fall- and Rob contributed the orchestral arrangement for "Loveology" at last November’s DECLASSIFIED show.) This time Rob wrote a beautiful arrangement for the 6 musicians in yMusic.

What a special world Jenji created and invited us all into. Over the years it was a privilege to see the Orange Family grow and expand and experiment. Making a new interpretation of the song felt like a fitting way to say goodbye. The last season is coming your way July 26th, and you can find the full version of “You’ve Got Time (chamber version)”, wherever you buy or listen to your music. I hope you enjoy it- we loved making it for you!
